October 4
The First Paddlers start
down the Texas Recognized
Greens Bayou Paddling Trail
What an exciting day for Houston and for Texas! After 15 years of meeting and planning, the Greens Bayou Coalition Paddle Trail committee, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Houston Parks Board and Houston Parks & Recreation Department and all their other partners celebrated the grand opening of the Greens Bayou Paddling Trail as 70+ paddlers started the
Annual Greens Bayou Regatta!

This year's Regatta was once again sponsored by Coca Cola Southwest Beverages, and has always been presented by the Coalition to showcase Greens Bayou as a natural recreational jewel in urban Houston. Many different types of paddlers enjoy this Regatta - serious racers, people out to enjoy the bayou, and conservationists helping to clean up the floatables that collect along the edges. Everyone had a great time!

Our mission is to improve the quality of life in the watershed. We host cleanups, plant trees, promote, and seek funding for, parks, trails, & boat launches, and advocate for flood mitigation and resilience. We also monitor water quality and have an on-the-water environmental education program for kids. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit and we are funded through donations, grants and sponsorships. The Regatta serves as a fundraiser, an awareness campaign and a cleanup effort!

We couldn't do this without our sponsors, or our volunteers! We thank Houston Parks Board and Houston Parks & Recreation--without their wonderful parks and launches, we wouldn't have a Regatta at all. Many thanks to In-Kind donors Precinct 4 who shared Corporate Cup canoes, and to Precinct 2 who this year shared tents, tables, chairs , and also transported everything from park-to-park. Huge thanks to TEXSAR and our sweeps, Fran Wilcox and Tyrone White, to Rico Torres of AR's Entertainment Hub for once again rocking the after-party; and Coca Cola SWB who kept us hydrated. What would we do without the great Barry Ross family and North Belt UD, who again cooked up our famous "Best Lunch on the Bayou?" And to Sam's Club for the Rotisserie Chickens! And thanks to Spindletap who most kindly provided the beer. And finally, we definitely appreciate METRO for getting everyone back to their vehicles at the end of the day with their usual excellent service.

Race Director Tom Helm made sure we had a fun and safe Regatta. He's promised to come back and do it again next year. Special thanks to his amazing assistant time keeper, Senia Ziegler who helped keep up with all the boats, this time digitally!

Our volunteers are the best! You got everyone registered, set up tents and tables, helped carry canoes, weighed trash, loaded vehicles--the event wouldn't have happened without you! We love you all!

We look forward to seeing you soon on Greens Bayou!
Join us in our efforts to make the watershed a wonderful place
to live, work and play!
